Lagos Launches Swimming Trials to Build Aquatics Culture

‘We are building a culture of competitive aquatics in Lagos’: That was the message from the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) as it announced swimming trials for young athletes scheduled for March 22 at the Rowe Park Sports Complex in Yaba.

The commission explained that the trials are designed to discover and nurture talent, with events open to boys and girls aged 16 and under.

Competitions will be staged across three age categories viz 15/16 years, 13/14 years, and 12 years and below, covering the full range of swimming disciplines.

Athletes will contest individual races such as the 100m Butterfly, 50m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke, and 100m Breaststroke, alongside team relays including the 4x50m Mixed Freestyle and Medley.

‘These trials are not merely a selection exercise; they are a declaration of intent. We are deliberate about unearthing talent at its most formative stage, and equally deliberate about providing the structures within which that talent can flourish,’ said Lekan Fatodu, director-general of LSSC.

Fatodu added that every young swimmer stepping onto the blocks represents the future of Lagos aquatics and, by extension, Nigerian aquatics.

Aderoju Ope-Ajayi, chair of the Lagos State Aquatics Association (LSAA), echoed the sentiment, stressing that the initiative is about building a lasting legacy.

‘This is about legacy. The trials go beyond identifying swimmers for a season, we are building a culture of competitive aquatics in Lagos, one that is structured, inclusive and sustainable.

‘We want every parent in this state to see the swimming pool as a place of opportunity for their child, and every young athlete to understand that this pathway leads somewhere meaningful,’ she said.
