Werder Bremen Prepare for Possible Victor Boniface Return

Werder Bremen are bracing for the unexpected as striker Victor Boniface edges closer to a surprise comeback following knee surgery earlier this year.

The Nigerian forward, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, had been widely considered finished for the season after undergoing surgery in January.

Boniface’s stint in Bremen has been marred by setbacks. After failing a medical at AC Milan last summer, he joined Werder late in the transfer window but struggled to regain full match fitness.

His performances were inconsistent, with issues surrounding conditioning and confidence evident on the pitch. Off the field, cryptic social media activity raised questions about his state of mind, prompting both Leverkusen and Bremen to welcome the surgery as a chance for him to regroup away from the spotlight.

Sporting director Peter Niemeyer confirmed that Boniface will return to individual training this week.

With seven weeks left in the Bundesliga season, the possibility of him featuring again for Werder cannot be ruled out. Midfielder Jens Stage, currently battling injury himself, praised Boniface as ‘a cool guy and great footballer,’ underscoring the squad’s openness to his reintegration.
