Korir to Refund $40,000 Prize Money as Dever Elevated to Podium in NYC Marathon

Albert Korir, the 2021 New York City Marathon champion, has been handed a five-year ban by the Athletics Integrity Unit after testing positive for CERA in three separate out-of-competition samples collected in Kenya in October 2025.

As part of his punishment, Korir must forfeit all results and refund prize money earned from the date of his first violation.

This includes the $40,000 he received for finishing third at the 2025 New York City Marathon, where he ran 2:08:57.

The annulment of Korir’s result has reshaped the standings.

Britain’s Patrick Dever, who originally finished fourth, has now been upgraded to third place and will inherit the $40,000 prize. Switzerland’s Matthias Kyburz moves into fourth with $25,000, while American Joel Reichow takes fifth for $15,000.

Fellow American Charles Hicks is confirmed in sixth with $10,000. The redistribution continues down the order, with Norway’s Sondre Nordstad Moen seventh on $7,500, Eritrea’s Tsehay Weldlibanos eighth on $5,000, and American Joe Klecker ninth on $2,500.

Italy’s Daniele Meucci, who had finished 11th and was outside the prize bracket, now moves into tenth place and will collect $2,000.

At the top of the podium, Benson Kipruto of Kenya remains the winner in 2:08:09, earning $100,000, while compatriot Alexander Mutiso is confirmed as runner-up in the same time for $60,000.

Korir’s suspension runs through January 7, 2031, ensuring that all results and earnings from October 2025 onward are void.
