Paul Bassey Backs Judo Team Ahead of African Championships in Nairobi
Akwa Ibom state Sports Commissioner, Elder Paul Bassey, has reaffirmed support for Team Nigeria Judo as the national contingent arrived in Nairobi ahead of the 2026 African Senior Judo Championships, which begin on April 24.
Leading Nigeria’s medal hopes are Akwa Ibom’s Enku Ekuta (-63kg) and Immaculata Ufot (-52kg), whose inclusion in the squad has been hailed by Bassey as evidence of the state’s growing footprint in elite sports development.
‘When Team Nigeria steps onto the mats in Nairobi, they carry the hopes of over 200 million people, and we are proud that Akwa Ibom is strongly represented in that mission,’ Bassey said. ‘Our prayers are with the entire team for a successful outing, a historic podium finish, and, most importantly, injury‑free competition.’
Ekuta, known for her tactical mastery and discipline, has steadily built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most consistent judokas. Ufot, regarded as an emerging talent, earned her place through a competitive domestic pathway and is seen as a future star of the sport.
The African Senior Judo Championships, sanctioned by the African Judo Union, will feature athletes from 35 countries and serve as a key ranking tournament. Nigeria’s performance is expected to influence its standing on the continental medal table.
Bassey emphasized that Akwa Ibom’s athlete‑first policy remains central to its sports agenda, ensuring sustained support for athletes representing Nigeria internationally.
