NBBF Names NBA Veteran David Fizdale as D’Tigers Head Coach

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has appointed former NBA coach David Fizdale as the new Head Coach of the men’s senior national team, D’Tigers, in what officials describe as a bold step toward global basketball excellence.
The appointment, approved by the NBBF Technical Committee, is part of the federation’s long-term vision to build a world-class basketball structure capable of competing at the highest international levels.
NBBF President, Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, welcomed the development, noting that Fizdale’s leadership and experience align with Nigeria’s future ambitions.
‘David Fizdale represents the level of professionalism and basketball knowledge that we need. His experience and understanding of the modern global game will be invaluable as we continue building a programme capable of competing with the very best in the world,’ Kida said.
Fizdale, who has coached in the NBA with teams such as the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks, is widely respected for his expertise in player development, culture building, discipline, and teamwork training.
Beyond leading D’Tigers competitively, he is expected to contribute to coaches’ education, player development pathways, and broader technical growth within Nigeria’s basketball ecosystem.
According to the NBBF, the appointment is not just about immediate results but about laying the foundation for a sustainable future where Nigerian basketball can thrive globally for years to come.
