Premier League: Why West Ham Goal Was Disallowed Vs Arsenal

The Premier League has issued an official statement clarifying why Callum Wilson’s stoppage-time equaliser against Arsenal was ruled out.

Deep into added time at the London Stadium, Wilson appeared to have rescued a point for West Ham when his effort crossed the line despite Declan Rice’s desperate clearance.

However, after a lengthy VAR review, referee Chris Kavanagh overturned the decision.

The Premier League’s Match Centre confirmed that West Ham striker Pablo Felipe committed a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in the build-up.

Kavanagh’s announcement read: ‘After review, West Ham number 19 commits a foul on the goalkeeper. Final decision is direct free kick.’

The ruling preserved Arsenal’s 1-0 lead, secured by Leandro Trossard seven minutes from time, and ensured the Gunners moved five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
