Botswana Awarded Hosting Rights for 2028 African Senior Athletics Championships
Botswana has officially been confirmed as the host nation for the 2028 Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Senior Championships, a landmark achievement that underscores the country’s growing influence in continental athletics.
The announcement was made during the CAA Congress, where Acting Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) President Oabona Theetso delivered the final presentation on the nation’s readiness to stage the prestigious event.
The presentation, attended by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe and other continental delegates, sealed Botswana’s successful bid and marked the culmination of a journey that began in Douala in 2024.
At that time, former BAA President Moses Bantsi had laid the foundation with an initial bid presentation, which set Botswana on course for this historic moment.
Ghana was awarded the 2026 edition of the championships, while Botswana was earmarked for 2028. With the official confirmation now in place, Botswana will host the continent’s finest athletes in an event that will also serve as a pathway to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The awarding of the hosting rights represents a significant milestone for Botswana, both in terms of athletics development and national pride.
