History Maker Sawe Returns to Berlin Marathon

Sabastian Sawe, the man who stunned the athletics world by breaking the two-hour barrier in a competitive marathon, will return to the Berlin Marathon on September 27.

Sawe made history last month in London when he clocked 1:59:30, becoming the first athlete to run under two hours under official race conditions.

The Kenyan star is also the defending champion in Berlin, having won last year’s race in 2:02:16 despite unusually hot conditions.

He will now line up on a course renowned for producing record-breaking performances. Berlin has been the stage for nine marathon world records since 1998, including Eliud Kipchoge’s 2:01:19 in 2022, which stood as the world record at the time.

Sawe’s return adds intrigue to a race that has become synonymous with marathon history.

From Paul Tergat’s 2:04:55 in 2003 to Kipchoge’s two record runs in 2018 and 2022, Berlin has consistently delivered iconic moments.

With Sawe’s form and his recent London triumph, anticipation is building that another chapter could be written this September.
