24th African Senior Athletics Championships: Nigeria Eyes Men’s 4x100m Glory After 12-Year Wait

Nigeria’s men’s 4x100m relay team, spearheaded by Favour Ashe, will attempt to sprint back into continental reckoning when the final of the event holds Friday at the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships.

The quartet of Ashe, James Taiwo Emmanuel, Tejiri Godwin, and individual 100m bronze medalist Chidera Ezeakor will be aiming to deliver Nigeria’s first men’s relay gold in 12 years.

Nigeria last stood atop the podium in 2014, having previously won in 2006, making their record just two victories in the past two decades.

Expectations are high as the team looks to end a medal drought after a disappointing third day of competition.

However, the challenge is formidable. Ghana, who denied Nigeria the title two years ago, once again loom large after posting the fastest qualifying time of 38.69 seconds, narrowly ahead of Nigeria’s 38.77.

With the final set to ignite the track in Accra, all eyes will be on Ashe and his teammates to see if they can reclaim Nigeria’s sprinting pride and secure a long-awaited gold medal in ‘enemy territory’.
