Nsofor: Eagles Not Good Enough for 2026 FIFA World Cup
Ex-International Says Qualification Proves Team’s Level
Former Super Eagles striker Victor Obinna Nsofor has insisted that Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is proof the team was not good enough to compete at the tournament.
Speaking on Brila FM, Nsofor argued that qualification remains the ultimate measure of a team’s quality.
‘If you didn’t qualify for the World Cup, it means you are not good to play in the World Cup. That is the truth and we should not paint it; it’s simple as truth,’ he said.
The former forward, who represented Nigeria at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, stressed that even football giants would be judged by the same standard if they failed to qualify.
‘If Brazil didn’t qualify for the World Cup it shows you aren’t good enough to play in it, it’s the truth,’ he added.
Nsofor pointed to DR Congo’s recent performances as an example of merit-based qualification.
‘DR Congo beat us then beat Jamaica, will you say they are not good enough to play at the World Cup? They are good enough because they played in the qualifiers and now they are in the World Cup. They have quality players to ball in the tournament, that’s the fact let’s not paint things left and right.’
Nsofor played a key role in Nigeria’s qualification for the 2010 World Cup, scoring twice against Kenya in a decisive qualifier in November 2009.
His comments now add to the ongoing debate about the current Super Eagles squad and the standards required to return to the global stage.
