Leotlela Targets Commonwealth Glory After Diamond League 100m Triumph

Gift Leotlela’s reaction said it all after storming to victory in the men’s 100m at the Diamond League in China, his first ever triumph on the prestigious circuit.

‘It means a lot to win my first ever Diamond League. It is a first time in China for me, so to finish number one was a great feeling. I wanted to come here and enjoy myself and make a good start to the season.

‘I knew I am in great shape, but I didn’t want to think about time, just focus on my race,’ the South African sprinter reflected.

Leotlela, the reigning South African champion and fifth‑place finisher at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, admitted his start was ‘decent, not great,’ but emphasized how he kept his composure, stayed in rhythm, and finished strong to secure the win.

Looking ahead, the 28‑year‑old has set clear targets for the remainder of the season.

‘The main goal for me in 2026 is to win the Commonwealth Games and then on to the Ultimate Championships at the end of the season,’ he said.
