Iwobi Fit Again, Set for Landmark 100th Nigeria Cap
Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has confirmed his availability for Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal, delivering a timely boost for the Super Eagles as they contend with a string of squad withdrawals.
Iwobi, who sustained a hamstring injury in April during Fulham’s Premier League clash with Brentford, returned to action before the season’s end, starting the club’s final two matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United. His recovery ensures he will be fit to feature in Nigeria’s high-profile fixtures this month.
The 30-year-old is poised to reach a significant milestone when Nigeria face Poland in Warsaw on Wednesday. Should he take the field, Iwobi will earn his 100th cap for the Super Eagles, joining an elite group that includes Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama, and Ahmed Musa.
Reflecting on his season and Nigeria’s third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations, Iwobi acknowledged both progress and room for improvement.
‘Good season overall, also Afcon we did well. When you go to a tournament you want to win it but to achieve third place in a tough competition is still credit to ourselves. We always strive to achieve more to improve,’ he said on the Alexander Yaa Digg podcast.
Iwobi also expressed gratitude for his return to fitness, noting: ‘I’m grateful to be back fit after injury. I was able to finish the season feeling good. Of course, I’ve got to get ready for the international break, but I have a little time off to refresh.’
