Ronaldo, Iwobi Headline Nigeria Vs Portugal Friendly in Leiria

The Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria will host a captivating international friendly on Wednesday night as Nigeria’s Super Eagles confront Portugal’s Seleção das Quinas.

Though billed as a friendly, both sides are determined to avoid defeat, with coaches Éric Chelle and Roberto Martinez eager to preserve their respective records.

Chelle, who has guided Nigeria for 15 months, boasts an impressive run of 24 matches with only one regulation-time loss, a pre-Africa Cup of Nations warm-up against Egypt in December 2025.

Martinez, meanwhile, has steered Portugal through a four-match unbeaten streak, including victories over USA and Chile, and a draw with Mexico. His last setback came seven months ago against the Republic of Ireland.

For Portugal, this clash serves as their final rehearsal before opening their FIFA World Cup campaign against DR Congo in Group K. Martinez has a full-strength squad at his disposal, led by five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.

He is joined by stalwarts such as Rúben Dias, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, João Félix, and Rafael Leão. Fernandes was instrumental in their last outing against Chile, scoring a spectacular goal and assisting Gonçalo Guedes.

Nigeria will mark a special occasion as midfielder Alex Iwobi earns his 100th senior cap. Despite missing star forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, Chelle remains confident, banking on the flair of Samuel Chukwueze, the experience of Moses Simon, and the form of Paul Onuachu, Terem Moffi, and Akor Adams.

Rising talent Philip Otele also impressed recently at the Unity Cup in London and against Poland in Warsaw.

Defensively, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Emmanuel Fernandez are expected to anchor the backline, while Bruno Onyemaechi and Zaidu Sanusi vie for the left wing-back role. Captain Wilfred Ndidi will marshal the midfield alongside Iwobi, supported by Frank Onyeka, Tochukwu Nnadi, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Raphael Onyedika, and promising youngster Christian Akpan.

The match begins at 8:45 p.m. local time in Portugal, the same time in Nigeria. The 29,000-capacity stadium in Leiria, situated midway between Lisbon and Porto, is set to witness a clash rich in history and ambition.

Portugal famously defeated Nigeria 4-0 in Lisbon in November 2022, while at youth level, their U20 side denied Nigeria the trophy at the 1989 FIFA U20 World Cup in Saudi Arabia.

Chelle, however, insists his team is focused on the present, ready to challenge Martinez’s World Cup-bound stars.
