All Eyes on Ajayi as NCAA Championships Reach Fever Pitch

The NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships in Eugene have already delivered unforgettable performances, with Ja’Kobe Tharp’s stunning 12.75 world record in the 110m hurdles and Adaejah Hodge’s blazing 10.63 world lead in the women’s 100m.

Now, anticipation is building for the men’s 100m final on Friday night (Saturday morning in Nigeria), where Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi is the overwhelming favorite to add another chapter to the Championships’ extraordinary narrative.

Ajayi enters the final with a world-leading 9.84 this season, his lifetime best, and many believe he could dip under 9.80 seconds. The meet record of 9.82, set by Christian Coleman in 2017, is firmly within reach.

Ajayi’s explosive form was already evident in March when he clocked 6.45 in the 60m indoors, a performance that signaled his readiness to dominate outdoors.

Drawn in lane five, Ajayi will line up just outside his compatriot and Auburn teammate Israel Okon, while another pre-race favorite, Jelani Watkins, is positioned in lane six, setting up a thrilling showdown.

Ogazi, 19, arrives as both NCAA and world leader with his 43.82 mark, and expectations are high for another spectacular run. He is seeking to defend his NCAA 400m title, while Ajayi is aiming for his first outdoor crown after annexing the indoor 60m earlier this year.
