2026 FIFA World Cup: Switzerland Set Shot Record in Qatar Draw

Switzerland set an unwanted World Cup record after being held to a late 1-1 draw by debutants Qatar in their opening match of the tournament.

Breel Embolo’s 17th‑minute penalty had given Murat Yakin’s side the advantage, and Switzerland looked in control for much of the contest.

They created a host of chances, with Dan Ndoye, Michel Aebischer, and Ruben Vargas all going close, but failed to extend their lead.

That wastefulness proved costly in stoppage time when Qatar captain Boualem Khoukhi rose to head home a dramatic equaliser, earning his nation their first‑ever World Cup point.

The Swiss registered 26 shots during the game, the most in their World Cup history since records began in 1966. Yet despite their dominance, they were left frustrated as Qatar celebrated a historic result.

Appearing in their fourth World Cup finals tournament, Ricardo Rodriguez and Granit Xhaka made Swiss history with their joint-record 13th appearance on the global stage.
