Why Cucurella Dumped Chelsea for Real Madrid in £51.8M Deal
Marc Cucurella’s departure from Chelsea was driven primarily by his desire to return to Spain for personal and family reasons.
The 27-year-old defender made clear his wish to move back home, prompting Chelsea to work towards a solution that satisfied both the player and the club.
Real Madrid stepped in with a £51.8 million offer, structured as €55 million plus €5 million in add-ons, which Chelsea accepted, viewing it as a strong fee.
The Blues also considered the rapid development of young defender Jorrel Hato last season, which gave them confidence to sanction Cucurella’s exit.
Cucurella joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2022 for £63 million and went on to make 163 appearances, winning the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup. His departure marks the end of a four-year spell at Stamford Bridge, slightly below the club’s original investment.
Chelsea are now expected to pursue at least two starting-level signings to strengthen their squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign. Recruitment efforts are focused on players capable of making an immediate impact.
