John Terry Tips England for World Cup Glory Ahead of Croatia Clash

Former England captain and SuperSport FIFA World Cup analyst John Terry has backed the Three Lions to challenge for glory at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Speaking ahead of England’s opening clash against Croatia on Wednesday evening, Terry expressed optimism that this squad has the quality and belief to finally bring football’s biggest prize home.

‘I’m extremely excited to see England at this World Cup,’ Terry said. ‘We have had a couple of good tournaments over the last few years. We have a really good squad of players and, more importantly, I feel like we have a real chance of going on to win this World Cup.’

The Chelsea legend highlighted captain Harry Kane as pivotal to England’s hopes, stressing his importance both on and off the pitch.

Terry also praised the transition under Gareth Southgate and expressed confidence that new manager Thomas Tuchel can make a decisive impact.

England’s campaign begins against Croatia on 17 June at 22:00, a fixture expected to provide an early test of their credentials. Terry acknowledged that knockout football will require both quality and luck, but believes England’s squad depth surpasses many rivals.

While supportive of the final squad, Terry admitted he would have included Manchester United’s Harry Maguire, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, and Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, citing their big-game experience and set-piece quality.

Looking ahead, Terry identified France and Spain as the biggest obstacles to England’s ambitions, pointing to their attacking depth and possession-based styles.

‘I would see France as the favourites,’ he said. ‘Their attacking options and threat are so vast and so deep.’
