Tunisia Turns to Hervé Renard After Lamouchi’s Brutal Exit
Tunisia have moved swiftly to appoint Hervé Renard as their new head coach, just days after sacking Sabri Lamouchi in the wake of a heavy World Cup defeat.
Lamouchi was dismissed following Tunisia’s 5-1 loss to Sweden in their opening Group F fixture at the Estadio Monterrey in Guadalupe, Mexico. The result sparked chaos behind the scenes, with the Tunisian Football Association announcing his departure on Instagram and initially naming Mondher Kebaier as interim replacement.
In a dramatic turn, however, the federation confirmed Renard would take charge until the end of the tournament. Their statement added that negotiations would open after Tunisia’s World Cup campaign to explore a longer-term partnership ‘based on specific sporting goals.’
Renard, 57, brings a wealth of international experience, having previously managed Ivory Coast, Zambia, and Angola. He is best remembered for guiding Saudi Arabia to a shock 2–1 victory over Argentina in their 2022 World Cup opener in Qatar.
More recently, he coached the French women’s national team at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where they reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Australia.
Tunisia now face Japan in their second group game on Saturday before taking on the Netherlands.
