University of Ibadan, Uganda Christian University Qualify for FISU 3×3 World Cup
The University of Ibadan and Uganda Christian University have secured Africa’s qualification spots for the upcoming FISU 3×3 Basketball World Cup in Macau, China, after emerging champions at the 2026 FASU Afro-Varsity 3×3 Basketball Challenge.
The two-day tournament, held from May 31 to June 1 at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, brought together 16 universities from six African countries in a celebration of elite sport, cultural exchange, and environmental sustainability.
The event opened with the Green FASU Initiative, a symbolic tree-planting exercise that underscored the federation’s commitment to sustainability.
FASU Secretary General Peninnah Kabenge encouraged each delegation to plant a tree as a lasting reminder of their participation and contribution to a greener campus.
On the court, the University of Ibadan dominated the men’s competition, advancing through the knockout stages before defeating Nile University 19-14 in an all-Nigerian final.
Odunola Timothy was named Most Valuable Player, while Samuel Bello Oluwatobiloba finished as the leading scorer.
In the women’s competition, Uganda Christian University defended their continental crown with a 21-15 victory over USIU-Africa in the final.
Star player Ayano Martinez Alexis earned both the MVP and Top Scorer awards, attributing her success to preparation, discipline, and teamwork.
With their victories, the University of Ibadan and Uganda Christian University will represent Africa at the FISU 3×3 Basketball World Cup in October. Attention now shifts to the 12th All Africa University Games, scheduled to take place later this year in Egypt.
