Switzerland sealed first place in Group B at the FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada, marking their fourth successive progression from the group stage.
Despite the defeat, Canada celebrated advancing to the knockout rounds for the first time in their history.
Both sides entered the match knowing a draw would be enough to qualify, but Switzerland required victory to leapfrog Canada into top spot.
After a cagey first half, the game burst into life just 40 seconds after the restart when Johan Manzambi’s low cross found Ruben Vargas, who drilled home at the back post.
Eleven minutes later, Breel Embolo held up play before setting up Manzambi, whose shot squeezed under Maxime Crepeau for his third goal of the tournament.
Canada responded with urgency, and coach Jesse Marsch’s substitutions paid off when Nathan Saliba lofted a ball across the box for Promise David to volley in, reducing the deficit.
The hosts pressed for an equalizer, but Tani Oluwaseyi headed wide and David’s late effort was saved by Gregor Kobel, who was named Flashscore Man of the Match.
Switzerland’s victory extended their impressive record, now unbeaten in 17 of their last 19 group stage fixtures at major tournaments.
Canada, meanwhile, finished second above Bosnia & Herzegovina on goal difference, though they lose home advantage for their Round of 32 tie.
