Rajindra Campbell Eyes World Record After Zagreb Triumph, Skips Commonwealth Games
Olympic bronze medalist delivered another historic performance at the Boris Hanzeković Memorial in Zagreb, throwing 22.44m to set a new Jamaican national record in the men’s shot put.
Campbell, who won bronze at the 2024 Olympic Games, described the competition as the best series of his career.
‘This is my best series ever, so I was happy to chase after Fabbri threw the 22m. This competition is the best, it removed the limitation out of my mind, and I just kept throwing and then the National Record came,’ he said.
The Jamaican star has a special connection to Zagreb, having also set a national record at the meet in 2023.
He praised the atmosphere, saying: ‘One of the best things about Zagreb is when we are throwing, it’s just us, all the attention and energy is here. So, this is the best place to showcase your talent and your work. I will keep coming here and hoping to continue progressing.’
Looking ahead, Campbell confirmed his next appearance will be at the Eugene Diamond League, with July dedicated to training. That schedule means he will not compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which begin in mid-July.
‘Next is the Eugene Diamond League, the rest of July is more for training and focus on the end of the season,’ he explained, hinting that his preparation takes priority over the Games.
Currently competing at 150kg, Campbell is focused on refining his strength, speed, and technique.
‘I need to keep getting stronger, faster and more technical so that hopefully one day I will be the World Record Holder,’ he declared.
Reflecting on changes in his career, Campbell said he is now in a better place mentally and technically.
‘I made some switches to my career, I wanted to be in the same position as the Americans where they had funding and support. Since my mindset is a lot better and I was actually able to get much stronger without thinking about what I would do if something goes wrong. Now, I am in a better place mentally and technically, am stronger and more disciplined,’ he added.
