Werro Holds Edge Over Bol Ahead of Paris 800m Diamond League Showdown

The women’s 800m in Paris is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated races of the season, as Switzerland’s Audrey Werro and the Netherlands’ Femke Bol prepare to face off.

Werro currently holds the advantage in their head-to-head record, 1-0, after her victory at the 65th Ostrava Golden Spike in the Czech Republic on June 16.

Werro, fresh off her breakthrough performance in Stockholm, admits her rise has come sooner than expected.

‘My time in Stockholm was really crazy, I didn’t expect it this year, but rather in the years to come,’ she said.

‘I am now much better equipped tactically and mentally, and it is paying off.

‘Having Femke with us makes our discipline even more exciting. Sunday’s strategy is simple: follow the hare as long as possible and hold on. The pace required is that of the world record.’

Bol, meanwhile, is stepping into new territory as she transitions from the 400m hurdles to the 800m.

‘Moving from the hurdles to the 800m requires a real change of mindset,’ she explained at the pre-race presser.

‘Running against Audrey and Keely Hodgkinson is the best way to discover this new distance. It almost feels like I’m back in the juniors. I’m very excited to compete in my first 800m Diamond League race. I’ll have to be tactically smart, especially in a race where Audrey will be aiming for the world record.”
