Koeman Resigns After Netherlands World Cup Exit
Ronald Koeman has officially stepped down as head coach of the Dutch national team following their Round of 32 exit at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, where they were eliminated on penalties by Morocco.
‘Last night I made the decision to end my tenure as head coach of the Dutch national team,’ Koeman announced in a post on Instagram, confirming the end of his second spell in charge of Oranje.
Koeman faced heavy criticism after abandoning the 4-3-3 system that had guided the Netherlands through the group stage in favor of a 5-2-3 formation against Morocco.
The tactical switch left his side dominated, and after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser, the Dutch struggled in extra time before losing in the shootout.
Despite defending his tactical choices, Koeman admitted the pain of the exit.
‘It hurts that my period at Oranje ends like that. We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would write history. That didn’t work out. No one is more disappointed about that than me. As a head coach, you carry that responsibility.’
In his farewell message, Koeman also paid tribute to his wife Bartina, who has been battling illness.
‘My wife Bartina has supported and encouraged me every day to finish my work as a national coach, despite her own illness process. That is a testimony to incredible strength. I appreciate her more than I’ll ever be able to put into words.’
Koeman’s departure marks the end of a storied managerial career that included stints at Barcelona, Everton, Southampton, and Benfica, as well as two separate tenures with the Dutch national team.
