Salah Stars as Egypt Triumphs in Dallas Shootout, Reach World Cup Round of 16

Egypt carved out a historic moment at the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Dallas, defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw.

The Pharaohs, who had already celebrated their first-ever World Cup victory against New Zealand, now secured their maiden knockout-stage win, advancing to the Round of 16.

Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead in the 13th minute, heading home after Karim Hafez recycled a blocked effort back into the box.

Australia responded in the second half when Mohamed Hany, under pressure, inadvertently headed into his own net from an Aiden O’Neill free-kick.

Despite late chances for Egypt, including a Rami Rabia header brilliantly saved by Patrick Beach, the match went to extra time and ultimately penalties.

In the shootout, Mohamed Salah calmly converted with a Panenka, while Hossam Abdelmaguid sealed the victory with the decisive strike.

Australia faltered as Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed their attempts, continuing their unfortunate record of three defeats in three World Cup knockout ties, following losses to Italy in 2006 and Argentina in 2022.

The Pharaohs, led by coach Hossam Hassan, now look ahead to a Round of 16 clash in Atlanta on July 7 against the winner of Argentina v Cabo Verde.

Salah, passed fit despite hamstring concerns, was named Player of the Match for his leadership and composure.
