Portugal Boss Martinez Resigns Following Round of 16 Defeat

Roberto Martinez has resigned as head coach of Portugal following the team’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Portugal, considered one of the tournament favourites, were knocked out in the Round of 16 after a 1-0 defeat to Spain in Arlington, Texas.

Mikel Merino’s stoppage-time strike sealed the Iberian rivals’ fate and ended Portugal’s campaign prematurely.

Speaking after the match, Martinez confirmed his decision to step down.

‘It’s the end of the cycle. It’s important to have a new voice, a new leader,’ the 52-year-old said. ‘I came with the goal to win the World Cup, and because I did not win, it does not make sense to continue.’

Martinez, who took charge of Portugal in January 2023, guided the team through three and a half years, including their qualification campaign and preparations for the 2026 finals.

Reflecting on his tenure, he added: ‘I take with myself the memories, and hope that Portugal has good memories in the three and a half years I was head coach of the team. It was the experience of my life.’
