Team Nigeria Athletes Ready to Deliver at Glasgow 2026, Says AFN Performance Director

Team Nigeria’s athletes are ready to deliver strong performances at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, according to Athletics Federation of Nigeria Performance Director Victor Okorie, who said the team’s final preparations in Aberdeen have been productive and inspiring.

Okorie said the Nigerian delegation will complete its final training session in Aberdeen on Friday morning before departing for Glasgow, the host city of the Games. He expressed confidence in the athletes’ focus, discipline and unity as they prepare to compete on the international stage.

‘Our time in Aberdeen has been productive, inspiring and invaluable,’ Okorie said in a Facebook post. ‘Training has been outstanding, and the atmosphere within the team is filled with unity, belief, determination and hope.’

The Performance Director said the athletes would enter competition carrying the hopes and aspirations of millions of Nigerians, adding that they were determined to compete with courage, integrity and excellence.

‘In just a few days, these exceptional athletes will step onto the track and field carrying not only the Green-White-Green flag, but also the hopes, dreams and aspirations of over 240 million Nigerians,’ he said.

Okorie also called on Nigerians living in the United Kingdom and across Europe to turn out in large numbers to support Team Nigeria in Glasgow, stressing that the presence and encouragement of Nigerian fans could provide an important boost to the athletes.

He expressed appreciation to the National Sports Commission for its support towards the team’s preparations, particularly Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade, whom he described as a leader whose energy, accessibility and commitment had inspired confidence within the camp.

‘By the grace of God, Team Nigeria is ready,’ Okorie declared. ‘We are determined to compete with courage, integrity and excellence, and to make our great nation proud.’

The AFN Performance Director also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support for the development of Nigerian sports and athletes as Team Nigeria prepares to begin its campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
