Mbappé Pens Emotional Letter to France, Vows Les Bleus Will Return Stronger

France captain Kylian Mbappé has expressed his heartbreak following Les Bleus’ disappointing end to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, thanking supporters for their unwavering backing while promising the team’s journey is far from over.

In an emotional open letter shared on social media on Monday, the Real Madrid forward admitted the pain of missing out on the World Cup title would linger, despite finishing the tournament as the Golden Boot winner with 10 goals.

France’s campaign ended in the semi-finals after a defeat to eventual champions Spain, denying Mbappé the chance to add a second World Cup winners’ medal to his collection.

Mbappé said he was proud of the team’s commitment throughout the tournament, insisting every player had given everything in pursuit of the trophy. While acknowledging that winning the Golden Boot was a personal honour, he admitted it would have meant far more had it been accompanied by World Cup success.

The 27-year-old also paid tribute to his teammates, coaching staff and the French Football Federation, reserving special thanks for former head coach Didier Deschamps.

Although he declined to reveal the details of their private conversation, Mbappé wrote, “I’ve already said to Didier what I needed to say. He knows.”

Reflecting on his World Cup journey, Mbappé said captaining France at the tournament was a lifelong dream fulfilled and thanked supporters who travelled to the United States, as well as millions who stayed up through the night to cheer the team from home.

Despite the disappointment, the France skipper ended his message on a note of optimism, promising supporters that the national team’s ambitions remain unchanged.

“The World Cup has come to an end, but the story goes on,” Mbappé wrote.

“There will be other matches, other nights in summer and in winter when we’ll all come together again over this same game, with the same undiminished excitement. Our journey together is far from over.”
