Diamond League: Amusan Targets First 2026 Win Over Olympic Champion Russell in Zurich
World record holder Tobi Amusan will be out to secure her first victory over reigning Olympic champion Masai Russell this season when the two renew their rivalry at the Weltklasse Zurich Diamond League meeting on August 27.
The women’s 100m hurdles showdown, widely regarded as a dress rehearsal for the Diamond League Final in Brussels, will mark the fourth meeting between the pair in 2026.
Amusan, who owns the world record of 12.12 seconds, trails Russell 3-0 in their meetings this season after the American defeated her in the opening two Diamond League stops in China and again at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene.
However, the Nigerian still holds the overall career advantage and will be looking to extend her head-to-head lead to 8-6 after defeating Russell at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The race is expected to feature the world’s top three hurdlers, with reigning world champion Ditaji Kambundji joining Amusan and Russell in what promises to be one of the highlights of the penultimate Diamond League meeting of the season.
Kambundji will enjoy home support in Zurich after upsetting both Russell and Amusan to win world gold in Tokyo last year.
Russell has been the standout performer on the circuit in 2026, opening her Diamond League campaign with a blistering 12.14 seconds in Xiamen, just 0.02 seconds outside Amusan’s world record.
The American has maintained that form by setting meeting records in Eugene and Monaco.
Amusan, however, has steadily rediscovered her best form. The Nigerian has claimed Diamond League victories in Rabat and Paris in 12.28 seconds and remains firmly in contention for a fourth Diamond League title, having won the trophy in three consecutive seasons from 2021 to 2023.
A world-class field has also attracted Grace Stark of the United States, Dutch star Nadine Visser and Barbados’ Devynne Charlton, ensuring another high-quality contest as the athletes fine-tune their preparations for the Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 4 and 5.
