Onwuzurike Storms Into Commonwealth Games 200m Semifinals

Nigeria’s Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike produced an impressive performance to qualify for the men’s 200m semifinals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after winning his first-round heat in 20.31 seconds.
Running from lane five in Heat Five, Onwuzurike crossed the finish line first with the second-fastest qualifying time overall, behind only Jamaica’s Jevaughn Powell, who clocked 20.28 seconds.
Ghana’s Joseph Paul Amoah and Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor followed with identical 20.36-second performances, while Kenya’s Zablon Ekwam ran a season’s best 20.42 seconds and England’s Zharnel Hughes qualified in 20.45 seconds.
The top 16 performers from the opening round progressed to the semifinals, with Onwuzurike emerging as one of the leading contenders after his commanding heat victory.
The Nigerian will now be aiming to carry that momentum into the next round as he continues his quest for a Commonwealth Games medal in Glasgow.
