Chukwuka, Olajide Face Tough Test in Commonwealth 200m Semifinals
Nigeria’s Obi Jennifer Chukwuka and Olayinka Olajide will face stern opposition as they bid for places in the women’s 200m final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday evening.
Chukwuka, who owns a personal and season’s best of 23.26 seconds, has been drawn in the opening semifinal alongside Jamaica’s Alana Reid, England’s Success Eduan, Australia’s Torrie Lewis, Canada’s Frederique Chiasson, the British Virgin Islands’ Beyonce Defreitas, Malawi’s Asimenye Simwaka and Kenya’s Milcent Ndoro.
Reid, with a season’s best of 22.29 seconds, starts as the favourite in the race.
Olajide, whose personal and season’s best stands at 23.14 seconds, has an equally demanding assignment in the second semifinal.
The Nigerian will line up against the British Virgin Islands’ world-class sprinter Adaejah Hodge, who boasts the fastest entry time of 21.68 seconds, Jamaica’s Ashanti Moore, Australia’s Monique Hanlon, Canada’s Marie-Eloise Leclair, Scotland’s Alyson Bell, Tanzania’s Winfrida Makenji and Singapore’s Veronica Shanti Pereira.
Only the first two finishers in each semifinal, along with the next two fastest athletes overall, will progress to the final.
Both Nigerians will therefore need either automatic qualification or one of the two fastest non-automatic qualifying times to keep their medal hopes alive.
