Super Eagles AFCON Qualifier Forces NFF to Postpone Elective Congress
The Nigeria Football Federation has rescheduled its 2026 Elective Congress from Saturday, September 26, to Sunday, September 27, following a decision reached at an Extraordinary General Assembly held virtually on Wednesday.
The Elective Congress, which will usher in a new Executive Committee to steer the affairs of the federation for the next four years, will still take place in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, said the date change became necessary following the scheduling of Nigeria’s opening qualifying match for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations against Madagascar’s Barea on Friday, September 25.
According to Gusau, several candidates expected to participate in the federation’s elections will also be involved in the Super Eagles’ AFCON qualifier, making it practically impossible for them to travel to Lafia in time for the Congress the following day.
He explained that after consultations with the Confederation of African Football, the NFF Executive Committee convened the Extraordinary General Assembly to seek the approval of members for a one-day postponement of the election.
The proposal received the backing of Congress after a member formally moved a motion for the date change, which was immediately seconded and unanimously adopted, officially confirming Sunday, September 27, 2026, as the new date for the NFF Elective Congress.
