Amusan Storms Into Third Straight Commonwealth Games 100m Hurdles Final

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan moved within one race of making Commonwealth Games history after powering into her third consecutive women’s 100m hurdles final with a commanding victory in her semifinal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday.

The reigning champion clocked a wind-assisted 12.19 seconds (+3.8m/s) to comfortably win her race and underline her status as the overwhelming favourite to retain the title she first won in Gold Coast eight years ago.

Although the time will not count for record purposes because of the excessive tailwind, it was the fastest performance across the semifinals and a clear statement of intent from the world record holder.

The 29-year-old will now bid to become the first Nigerian track and field athlete to win the same event at three consecutive Commonwealth Games.

She is also chasing another milestone as the first woman to claim three straight Commonwealth Games 100m hurdles titles since the event was moved from 80m to 100m hurdles in 1970.

Amusan will also have her sights set on improving the Commonwealth Games record of 12.30 seconds that she established on her way to successfully defending her crown in Birmingham, becoming the first Nigerian track and field athlete to retain a Commonwealth Games title.

Standing between the Nigerian star and another historic triumph are a quality field led by reigning World Indoor champion and world indoor record holder Devynne Charlton of The Bahamas, Jamaica’s Olympic bronze medallist Megan Simmonds (Tapper), and South Africa’s Marie Fourie when the final takes place later on Thursday.
