Nigeria Storm into Mixed 4x400m Final with Fastest Qualifying Time

Nigeria have powered into the final of the mixed 4x400m relay at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after winning their opening-round heat in 3:14.58, the fastest time recorded across both heats at Scotstoun Stadium on Friday.

The Nigerian quartet finished first in Heat 1 to secure automatic qualification, with Australia taking second in 3:15.21 and Jamaica third in 3:17.36.

The top three teams in each heat qualified automatically for the final, with the next two fastest teams also earning places.

Nigeria’s 3:14.58 gave them a clear advantage at the top of the overall qualifying standings, with England the next fastest after winning Heat 2 in 3:15.11.

Kenya followed in 3:15.92, while Scotland secured third place in the second heat with a season’s best 3:19.07.

India and Zambia completed the final field as the two fastest non-automatic qualifiers, clocking 3:20.98 and 3:21.72 respectively. Sri Lanka, Uganda, Papua New Guinea and the Maldives failed to advance, while Sierra Leone were disqualified.

The Nigerian team now goes into the final with the fastest qualifying time and will be among the leading contenders for the medals.

Their 3:14.58 was more than enough to secure progression and demonstrated the depth of Nigeria’s mixed relay squad.

With England, Australia, Kenya, Jamaica, Scotland, India and Zambia joining Nigeria in the final, the stage is set for a fiercely contested medal race.

Nigeria, however, have already laid down an early marker by emerging as the fastest team from the heats.

The challenge now is to reproduce or improve on that performance when the medals are decided, as Nigeria seek to convert their impressive qualifying run into a place on the Glasgow 2026 podium.
