How Onwuzurike Sprinted Past Taylor to Snatch Commonwealth Games Silver

Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike produced a superb late surge to snatch silver in the men’s 200m at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, hunting down Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor in the closing stages before edging him at the line.

Onwuzurike clocked a season’s best 20.09 seconds to finish second behind South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, who won gold in 19.96. Taylor took bronze in 20.11, just two hundredths of a second behind the Nigerian.

The race looked very different in the early stages.

Onwuzurike was slow away and was eighth after the opening 20 metres. He was still among the backmarkers at 40m, but began to move through the field as the race opened up.

At 60m, he had made a huge move and was level with Taylor on 7.63 seconds.

Taylor was still ahead at 100m, reaching the mark in 10.38 compared with Onwuzurike’s 10.42. But the Nigerian was closing fast.

The decisive move came over the final 50 metres.

At 150m, Taylor had clocked 15.08 while Onwuzurike was at 15.17. The gap had become tiny, and the Nigerian continued to eat into it as they headed for the finish.

Onwuzurike then produced the stronger final drive.

He crossed the line in 20.09, while Taylor stopped the clock at 20.11. The Nigerian had turned a slow start into a silver medal, beating the Jamaican by just 0.02 seconds.

Dambile was already clear by then, winning in 19.96, but the real battle in the closing stages was between Onwuzurike and Taylor, and it was the Nigerian who refused to give up.

For Onwuzurike, the silver medal is a reward for one of the strongest finishes of the Glasgow athletics programme so far.
