Nigeria Drawn in Tough Heat for World U20 Mixed 4x400m Relay at World Championships
Nigeria will launch its campaign at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon on Wednesday when the country’s mixed 4x400m relay team lines up in a highly competitive third heat of the opening round.
The Nigerians have been drawn alongside athletics powerhouses the United States, Australia, Spain, Belgium, Ecuador and Hungary in Heat Three, with only the first three teams in each heat guaranteed automatic qualification for the final.
The race is expected to be one of the most competitive of the opening round, with Nigeria boasting a season’s best of 3:19.70, identical to the country’s all-time best set at the 2021 World U20 Championships in Nairobi. That mark places Nigeria among the strongest relay nations in the field despite facing formidable opposition.
The United States enters the championships as the holders of the World U20 Championships record of 3:17.69, set in Cali in 2022, while Australia has posted a season’s best of 3:19.27 this year. Spain also arrives in Oregon in impressive form with a season-leading mark of 3:22.16.
Nigeria’s national record of 3:19.70 ranks fifth on the World U20 all-time list, behind only the United States (3:17.69), India (3:17.76), the United Arab Emirates (3:18.81) and Australia (3:19.27), underlining the country’s pedigree in the event.
Heat Three is scheduled to begin at 10:42 a.m. local time on Wednesday, with the Nigerian quartet seeking to secure one of the three automatic qualification places for the final.
The mixed 4x400m relay is expected to provide one of Nigeria’s earliest opportunities to challenge for honours in Oregon, with the team aiming to reproduce the form that has made the country one of the strongest junior relay nations in the world.
