World U20 Championships: Jecinta Lawrence Chases Nigeria’s Rich 400m Legacy in Oregon
Nigeria’s teenage sensation Jecinta Lawrence will be aiming to add her name to the country’s illustrious history in the women’s 400m when she begins her campaign at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon on Thursday.
The 15-year-old, who has a season’s and personal best of 53.17 seconds, has been drawn in Heat Four of the opening round, where the first three athletes in each race, along with the six fastest losers overall, will advance to the semi-finals.
Lawrence faces a challenging field that includes Guyana’s Tianna Springer (51.69), Slovenia’s Maša Medjimurec (52.76), Germany’s Eni Kuske (53.44) and Colombia’s Sara Manuela Cuesta (53.92).
Beyond qualifying for the next round, Lawrence is chasing a place in Nigerian athletics history. Should she go on to win the title, she would become the fifth Nigerian woman to be crowned World U20 400m champion, following the footsteps of Fatima Yusuf (1990), Olabisi Afolabi (1994), Folashade Abugan (2008) and Imaobong Nse Uko (2021).
She would also become only the sixth Nigerian woman to win a medal in the event.
Nigeria’s remarkable record in the one-lap race also includes Margaret Etim, who claimed silver at the 2010 World Junior Championships with a time of 53.05 seconds, further underlining the country’s long-standing tradition of excellence in the event.
With four gold medals and one silver medal from previous editions, the women’s 400m remains Nigeria’s most successful individual event at the World Athletics U20 Championships.
Lawrence now has the opportunity to continue that proud legacy and reinforce the country’s status as one of the event’s traditional powerhouses on the global stage.
