All Eyes on Jessica Oji to Make History with Nigeria’s First-Ever World U20 Field Event Gold
Jessica Oji will carry Nigeria’s hopes of making history when she competes in the women’s shot put final at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon later on Thursday night (early Friday morning in Nigeria).
No Nigerian, male or female, has ever won a field event gold medal at the World U20 Championships, leaving the 19-year-old on the brink of a landmark achievement.
Oji enters the final as the overwhelming favourite after topping the 2026 world U20 rankings with a season and personal best of 18.50m, a mark she set indoors in New York in March.
Her closest challenger on this year’s list is Ecuador’s Belsy Jenniffer Quiñónez, whose best of 17.75m leaves her 75 centimetres behind the Nigerian.
Victory would also end a 24-year wait for a Nigerian field event medal by a woman at the championships. The last came in 2002, when Esther Aghatise won bronze in the women’s long jump. Among Nigerian men, Chinecherem Nnamdi remains the only medalist in a field event after claiming javelin bronze in 2021.
Oji will throw first in the 12-athlete final, with Ecuador’s Quiñónez, Germany’s Emily Scherf, American Jaslene Massey and Greece’s Maria Rafailidou expected to provide her stiffest competition.
While the championship record of 18.76m and the world U20 record of 20.54m appear out of reach, Oji’s consistency and clear advantage on the season’s top list make her the athlete everyone else will be chasing.
