World Athletics U20 Championships: Can Oyibu Succeed Ogunkoya as Nigeria’s Second 200m Champion After 40 Years?
Oghene Success Oyibu will carry Nigeria’s hopes of ending a remarkable 40-year wait for a women’s 200m gold medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships when she lines up in the final in Oregon on Saturday night.
Oyibu earned her place in the final after storming to victory in her semi-final in 23.13 seconds, and she will now start from Lane 8 in a nine-woman final scheduled for 8:50pm.
Her personal and season’s best of 22.90 seconds puts her among the leading contenders in a field headed by Jamaica’s Shanoya Mikalia Douglas, the world U20 leader at 22.11 seconds.
The Nigerian will also have history firmly in her sights. Should Oyibu win, she would become only the second Nigerian woman to claim the World U20 200m title, exactly four decades after Falilat Ogunkoya made history at the inaugural edition of the championships in Athens in 1986.
Ogunkoya’s victory remains Nigeria’s only women’s 200m gold at the championships. The country came close to another title in 2021 when Favour Ofili won bronze in Nairobi, but Nigeria has not returned to the top step of the podium in the event since Ogunkoya’s breakthrough triumph.
Oyibu therefore has an opportunity to join Ogunkoya in a very exclusive piece of Nigerian athletics history. A victory would not only deliver Nigeria its second women’s 200m title but would also bring an end to the country’s four-decade wait for another champion in the event.
The 19-year-old Nigerian will face a strong field that includes Douglas, who owns the fastest time in the world U20 rankings this season, American duo Mia Maxwell and Mariah Maxwell, Jamaica’s Sashana Johnson, Italy’s Margherita Castellani, Sweden’s Jamilia Bernhardsson, Antigua and Barbuda’s Tyra Fenton and South Africa’s Rume Burger.
Oyibu’s 22.90 seconds season’s best is the eighth-fastest mark among the finalists, but her semi-final victory demonstrated that she can rise to the occasion when it matters most. She will now need another exceptional performance to overcome a field containing several athletes with faster times.
