Osievwo-Thompson’s Historic Gold Sparks Nigeria’s Fencing Breakthrough

Seventeen-year-old Oghenegaren Osievwo-Thompson has etched his name into Nigerian fencing history after winning the men’s U-23 epee title at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, delivering the host nation’s first-ever international fencing gold medal.

Osievwo-Thompson’s landmark triumph has provided a major boost for Nigerian fencing on home soil, with top-rated Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoye adding a bronze medal in the men’s sabre.

Nigeria’s wheelchair fencers have also made a strong contribution, winning two silver and eight bronze medals, giving the host nation its most successful international fencing outing to date.

But while Nigeria has celebrated a historic breakthrough, India has dominated the championships, repeatedly hearing its national anthem played across the three weapons, epee, sabre and foil.

The Indian team has swept aside challenges from Australia, England, Wales, South Africa and Nigeria, while also collecting medals in the newly introduced wheelchair events.

With two days remaining, India sits comfortably atop the medal table with 17 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze medals, far ahead of second-placed England on two gold, two silver and nine bronze.

Nigeria and Cyprus complete the top four, with Cyprus securing its gold through a single athlete.
