Opta Supercomputer Tips Arsenal to Retain Premier League Title
Arsenal have been backed to retain the Premier League title in 2026-27, with the Opta supercomputer giving Mikel Arteta’s side a 38 per cent chance of successfully defending their crown.
The Gunners, who ended a 22-year wait for the league title last season, emerged as the clear favourites after Opta conducted 10,000 simulations of the new campaign.
Manchester City were rated Arsenal’s closest challengers with a 20.5 per cent chance, while Liverpool were given a 9.2 per cent probability of winning the title. Manchester United were fourth favourites at 6.2 per cent.
Arsenal’s impressive defensive numbers from last season have played a major role in their strong projection, although William Saliba’s fitness remains a concern. The Gunners’ win percentage since the French defender made his Premier League debut drops from 68.7 per cent to 47.6 per cent when he is absent.
The prediction comes amid significant changes across the Premier League, with nine of the 20 clubs entering the season with new head coaches.
Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea will all begin new eras under Enzo Maresca, Andoni Iraola and Xabi Alonso respectively, while Manchester United and Tottenham are preparing for their first full campaigns under Michael Carrick and Roberto De Zerbi.
Opta also identified Manchester City as Arsenal’s biggest threat despite Pep Guardiola’s departure.
The Manchester-based side have strengthened their midfield with the £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson and still possess Erling Haaland, who could challenge for a record-equalling fourth Premier League Golden Boot.
Liverpool were ranked third despite the arrival of Iraola, with Opta highlighting the need for Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz to improve significantly after difficult first seasons.
Manchester United’s fourth-place ranking represents a major rise from last season, when they were given only a 0.6 per cent chance of winning the title.
Aston Villa were rated fifth favourites at 4.8 per cent, followed by Chelsea at 4.1 per cent and Tottenham at 2.9 per cent.
