Dynamic Athletics Meet 2026: Aderemi Soars From 157th to 62nd in World After Stunning 50.95

Iyanuoluwa Aderemi has soared into the world’s top 100 women’s 400m runners for 2026 after producing a stunning 50.95 seconds at the Dynamic Athletics Meet in Lagos, announcing herself as one of Nigeria’s most exciting young quarter-milers.

The 17-year-old delivered the breakthrough performance last Saturday at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Ground, improving her previous personal best of 51.86 seconds, set in June, by an astonishing 0.91 seconds.

Ranked 157th in the world before the race, Aderemi’s 50.95 has catapulted her to 62nd in the world this year and made her the 67th woman globally to break 51 seconds in 2026.

Her performance also places Aderemi among Nigeria’s elite 400m runners. She has become the 11th Nigerian woman in history to run inside 51 seconds and is now the 10th fastest Nigerian woman ever over the distance.

In Africa, she is the 39th woman to break the 51-second barrier, further underlining the magnitude of her achievement at just 17.

The remarkable performance has earned praise for Olabanji Aiyegbusi, promoter of the Dynamic Athletics Meet, for providing a platform for young Nigerian athletes to compete, improve and prepare for major domestic competitions, including the National Sports Festival and National Intermediate Games later this year.

Track and field journalist Dare Esan believes the meeting could prove important in the rebuilding of Nigeria’s women’s 400m strength.

‘Since the quartet of Falilat Ogunkoya, Fatimah Yusuf, Olabisi Afolabi and Charity Opara retired, Nigeria has failed to produce that number of athletes running sub-51 seconds at the same time,’ Esan said.

‘This year alone, and prior to this meet, we could boast of three, led by African leader Ella Onojuvwevwo. Now, Aderemi has joined them as the fourth 50-second runner.’

Esan also pointed to the remarkable progress of high hurdler Janet Deleme Sunday, who continued her impressive 2026 campaign by setting a new lifetime best of 13.37 seconds in the 100m hurdles.

‘This is an athlete who started 2026 as a 14-second runner. She ended 2025 with a 14.15 best but has now run inside 14 seconds five times this year,’ Esan said.
