Enugu Ready for International Marathon as Organisers Unveil Prize Money

Enugu is set to take centre stage on Saturday as the Enugu City International Marathon enters its final countdown, with organisers unveiling a competitive prize purse for elite international athletes and Nigerian runners.

With three days to the August 28 race, the organisers said the prize structure is designed to attract world-class athletes while providing significant financial incentives for Nigerian runners competing in the 42km and 10km races.

The winner of the 42km elite race, for both men and women, will receive $15,000, while the second- and third-placed finishers will earn $10,000 and $5,000 respectively. The fourth and fifth positions will attract $3,000 and $2,000.

For Nigerian runners in the 42km race, the winner will pocket ₦3 million, with the second, third, fourth and fifth-placed athletes receiving ₦2 million, ₦1.5 million, ₦1 million and ₦500,000 respectively.

The 10km Nigerian race will also offer a ₦1 million first prize, while the second-placed runner will receive ₦750,000. The third, fourth and fifth positions will attract ₦500,000, ₦300,000 and ₦200,000 respectively.

The organisers said the prize structure reflects the marathon’s dual objective of bringing international talent to Enugu while supporting and rewarding Nigerian athletes and grassroots running.

They also confirmed that technical preparations for the race have been completed, with the course measured and certified and medical, security and logistics teams fully briefed. Digital timing systems and broadcast infrastructure have also been put in place for live coverage in Nigeria and beyond.

Arise TV, Channels TV and AIT are among the media partners for the event, while the International Conference Centre will serve as the official World Press Center.

‘Year one was our introduction to the world. Year two is our standard,’ the Local Organising Committee said. ‘With this prize structure, Enugu is ready to host world-class competition and reward the talent of our own.’
