Ajayi Could Make More History with Late Diamond League Final Invitation

Nigeria’s sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi could make another piece of history next week if a late invitation opens the door for him to compete in the men’s 100m at the 2026 Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels, Belgium.

The 21-year-old has already written his name into Diamond League history as the first Nigerian man to win a 100m race on the prestigious circuit, following his remarkable breakthrough season.

He could now become the first Nigerian man to compete in the men’s 100m at the Diamond League Final.

Ajayi finished 10th in the final 100m standings with 13 points, just outside the automatic qualifying positions.

Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya finished fifth with 19 points, while American star Noah Lyles placed ninth with 15 points, immediately ahead of Ajayi. The standings, however, do not constitute the final official entry list, with further invitations and wild cards still possible.

Ajayi could also benefit if Omanyala and Lyles decide not to compete in Brussels.

Omanyala has not raced since finishing sixth in his semifinal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on July 28, while Lyles has also been absent from competition since his appearance at the US Championships two days earlier.

If Omanyala withdraws, Lyles could potentially move into the final field as the next athlete in line. But should the American also decide not to run, Ajayi, currently 10th in the standings, could move closer to a historic place in the eight-man final.

With the final official entry list yet to be confirmed, Ajayi’s sensational performances this season and his two Diamond League victories could also strengthen his case for a special invitation or wild card.
