LOC Seeks Strong Media Support for Eko 2026 National Intermediate Games
The Local Organising Committee for the maiden National Intermediate Games, Eko 2026, has called for strong media support ahead of the event scheduled to hold in Lagos from October 1 to 15.
More than 15,000 athletes are expected to compete in 28 sports across 10 venues during the Games, which organisers hope will provide a platform for youth sports development in Nigeria.
Speaking at a media parley in Lagos, Chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee and Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said the media would play an important role in the success of the event.
‘We are aware of the power of the media and the significant role it has played in putting Lagos on the world map,’ Omotoso said, describing journalists and media organisations as ‘formidable partners in progress.’
He said the organising committee was open to engagement with the media and would welcome constructive criticism and recommendations.
‘We want you to be our eyes. We welcome your criticisms when you see that we are doing it right, and we are ready to make amends based on your recommendations,’ he said.
Omotoso also pointed to Lagos’ history of hosting major sporting events, including the maiden National Sports Festival in 1973 and the 2012 edition of the Games.
Organisers said they hoped Eko 2026 would build on that record and help provide greater opportunities for young Nigerian athletes, with the media expected to play a key role in publicising the event and the athletes taking part.
