Inkosi Brou Wins 2026 Viking Cup Sabre Tournament
Nigeria’s Inkosi Brou has added another major achievement to his growing international fencing career after winning the 2026 FIE Satellite Sabre Viking Cup in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Brou, who missed the opportunity to compete at last month’s Commonwealth Championships in Lagos, bounced back in impressive fashion to claim his third international medal at the one-day tournament sanctioned by the International Fencing Federation (FIE).
As the highest-ranked fencer in the competition, the 18-year-old Nigerian overcame opposition from across the world to emerge champion.
Brou began his campaign in the round of 16 with a commanding 15-4 victory over Hamid Al Maazmi of the United Arab Emirates before defeating Sweden’s Kenneth Kong 15-11 in the quarter-finals.
He continued his impressive run in the semi-finals, beating Czech Republic’s No. 4 seed Lumir Kral 15-12 to book his place in the final.
Facing Iceland’s Andri Maateev in the title decider and backed by a partisan home crowd, Brou remained composed to produce another dominant display, winning 15-6 and silencing the home supporters as he secured the Viking Cup title.
The victory adds to a growing medal collection for Brou, who won Nigeria’s first-ever global fencing medal in 2024 when he claimed silver at the World Tournoi Satellite Cup in Reykjavik. He followed that achievement with a bronze medal at the 2025 African Junior Championships in Angola.
The grandson of the late Professor Dora Akunyili, former Director-General of NAFDAC, Brou is currently Nigeria’s highest-ranked fencer in the world.
He trains at the Scarsdale Fencing Center and Peter Westbrook Foundation in the United States and has now set his sights on an even bigger target, becoming the first Nigerian fencer to compete at the Olympic Games, with Los Angeles 2028 firmly in his plans.
