National Intermediate Games Postponed to First Quarter 2027
The inaugural National Intermediate Games scheduled for Lagos from October 1 to 15, 2026, have been postponed to the first quarter of 2027 to allow organisers more time to prepare for what is expected to be a world-class maiden edition.
The postponement was formally communicated by the Lagos State Sports Commission to the National Sports Commission following a comprehensive review of preparations by the Local Organising Committee, the NSC and an independent Quality Control and Assurance Specialist.
The review followed a Joint Technical Meeting held from September 3 to 6 and covered proposed competition venues, sporting events, technical requirements, rules and regulations, as well as other critical operational areas.
According to the NSC, the assessment established that the Games could technically go ahead as scheduled, but concluded that the remaining period was not sufficient to deliver the inaugural edition to the required standard.
The decision is therefore aimed at protecting the quality, credibility and long-term success of the National Intermediate Games, which is expected to establish an operational benchmark for subsequent editions.
Lagos, which is hosting the maiden Games, has reaffirmed its commitment to the event and will continue preparations in partnership with the NSC and other stakeholders while the Local Organising Committee works towards fixing a new date in the first quarter of 2027.
Despite the postponement, the NSC said its preparations will continue, including athlete accreditation, zonal elimination competitions for team sports and other technical and operational activities within its immediate responsibilities.
The Games, designed to provide a major platform for young Nigerian athletes, will now enter 2027 with organisers hoping the additional preparation time will ensure a stronger and more credible inaugural edition.
