Bassey Relishes Fulham Captaincy Opportunity
Nigeria international Calvin Bassey has described captaining Fulham as a ‘privilege’ after being handed the armband in the club’s opening three Premier League matches.
Bassey stepped into the leadership role following an injury to regular captain Tom Cairney and says he is enjo
ying the added responsibility as he enters his fourth season at Craven Cottage.
‘It’s a privilege. Being able to captain this club is unbelievable,’ Bassey told Fulham’s official website.
The Super Eagles defender believes his familiarity with the squad has made the transition easier, allowing him to lead in his own way while helping his teammates on and off the pitch.
‘Going into my fourth season, I know the boys and get on with everyone, so I just be myself and try to help everyone,’ he said.
Bassey, who has established himself as an important figure in Fulham’s defence, added that his position as a centre-half naturally demands leadership and constant communication.
‘Leading comes naturally because of the position I play, being able to see everything and having to communicate as a centre-half,’ he added.
The 26-year-old has continued to combine his defensive duties with greater responsibility as Fulham’s stand-in captain, further underlining his growing influence at the Premier League club.
