Amusan Bags Career-Best $75,000 Despite World Ultimate Silver
Tobi Amusan may have missed out on the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships title, but the Nigerian hurdler walked away from Budapest with the biggest prize money of her career.
Amusan pocketed $75,000 after finishing second behind Masai Russell in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Ultimate Championships.
The prize surpasses the $70,000 Amusan earned for winning the same event at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, where she made history as the first Nigerian to win a World Athletics outdoor title.
Four years after that historic triumph, the 29-year-old has now added another piece of history to her illustrious career.
Her silver medal in Budapest makes Amusan the first Nigerian to mount the podium at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships, with Russell taking the inaugural title and the $150,000 winner’s prize.
Although the defeat denied Amusan another global title, the $75,000 payday represents her highest-ever prize money from a single athletics competition.
And she could have another lucrative opportunity on Friday when she competes at ATHLOS, where the winner of each event will receive $65,000.
Amusan therefore leaves Budapest without the inaugural Ultimate title, but with a new place in Nigerian athletics history, and a career-best financial reward.
