Seville Vows to Retain World Title After Ultimate Defeat

Oblique Seville has vowed to return stronger and defend his world 100m title next year after seeing his hopes of adding the World Athletics Ultimate Championship crown ended by Kenny Bednarek in Budapest.

The Jamaican finished second in Saturday’s Ultimate 100m final in 9.90 seconds, behind Bednarek’s 9.85, while Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi placed fourth in 9.93.

Seville had entered the final as the slight favourite after winning his semifinal in 9.90, but Bednarek produced a stronger finish to claim his first individual global title.

Despite the disappointment, Seville said the result had given him a clear indication of what he needs to improve ahead of next season.

‘It has been a long season and I am tired at this point,’ Seville said after the race. ‘I will take time off now and I know what I’ve got to improve for next year. I want to keep the world champion title next year.’

The defeat means Seville will leave Budapest without the Ultimate title, but his attention is already turning to the defence of the world crown he won in Tokyo in 2025.

Seville acknowledged the need for rest before beginning preparations for another title defence.

‘Kenny got the best out of this race,’ Seville said, congratulating the American on his victory.
