Gabby Thomas Reignites Doping Debate After World Ultimate Runner-Up Finish

Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas has reignited the debate over doping in athletics after reiterating her opposition to athletes and coaches involved in the use of banned substances.

Speaking in Budapest after finishing runner-up in the 200m at the World Ultimate Championships, Thomas said she considers herself an ‘equal opportunity doping hater’ and insisted that her criticism was not directed at any individual by name.

Thomas, who clocked 21.77 seconds in the 200m final, was asked about comments she made last summer on Instagram regarding coaches with doping histories and athletes who choose to work with them.

‘I am an equal opportunity doping hater, meaning that if you are actively doping in the sport, I do take issue with that,’ Thomas said.

‘No names were mentioned, but if you look at yourself and think that’s what you’re doing, then so be it.’

Her latest comments are likely to fuel an already sensitive conversation within athletics over athletes’ relationships with coaches who have previously been linked to doping offences.

Thomas did not identify any athlete or coach in her Budapest remarks, but her stance was clear: she believes athletes should be held accountable for the company and coaching environments they choose in a sport where doping remains one of its biggest integrity challenges.
